Stoke City midfielder Djibril Soumaré is set for an emotional reunion with former club Sheffield United this Saturday. The 23-year-old, who signed a three-year deal with the Potters this summer, will line up against the Blades as Stoke look to build on their 12th-place position in the Championship.
Defender Luke Graham was quick to highlight the Senegalese midfielder's influence since his arrival. "Djib’s been amazing," Graham said. "He’s a brilliant character to have around the dressing room as well as being an absolute unit on the pitch." Soumaré spent last season on loan at Sheffield United from Braga, making 27 appearances during a campaign that saw a managerial change from Ruben Selles to Chris Wilder. A clause for a permanent move to Bramall Lane was not activated, allowing Stoke to secure his signature.
Soumaré himself expressed his commitment to the Stoke cause upon signing. "My overriding emotion upon signing for Stoke City is one of pride," he stated. The midfielder emphasised his maturity, noting he is "no longer a kid" after a full Championship season, and pledged to earn the trust of supporters through his effort in training and matches.
The fixture carries added weight as Stoke aim to continue a solid start to the season. Steven Schumacher's side have taken 10 points from their opening seven games, with a recent run of three wins, one draw, and one loss in their last five outings. They come into the match on the back of a 2-1 away victory at Watford last Friday. The team's attacking efficiency is highlighted by an average of 1.43 goal minutes per game.
Sheffield United, currently 15th, will provide a stern test. Stoke will be without several key players including Aaron Cresswell and Eric Bocat, who scored in the win at Watford, due to injury. The full list of those currently sidelined is available on the club's injuries page. Following this, Stoke's next fixture is away to Bristol City on Tuesday 24 September.
