Stoke City manager Mark Robins insists this season ‘feels different’ as the club targets a long-awaited return to the Premier League. The Potters finished 17th in the Championship last term with 55 points (15W-10D-21L), 40 points adrift of leaders Coventry, and their recent form saw five straight losses, including a 2-0 defeat at Bristol City on 2 May 2026.

Robins, now in his second full season, highlights a refreshed approach after last year’s strong start-eight wins in 14 games-was derailed by injuries. Off-field, the club has overhauled its sports science and academy setups, while owner John Coates has backed five summer signings, including £10m midfielder Ethan Galbraith.
Why Robins believes promotion is possible
The manager told reporters that the squad’s mindset has shifted, with Coates targeting a top-eight play-off spot. ‘This season has changed. It’s positive; we’re looking forward,’ Robins said. ‘We’re desperate to get promoted for everybody.’ Stoke scored 51 goals but conceded 56 last season, a -5 difference they’ll aim to improve.

Stoke begin their 2026-27 campaign with a Carabao Cup tie against Oldham on Saturday, followed by a Championship opener at home to Swansea City on 16 August.
